The New LIFE School opened its doors in 2006 with the mission to “educate students in time to make a difference.” The New LIFE School is committed to the growth and success of students in the New York City area who have struggled academically, behaviorally and emotionally in a mainstream school setting. Many students arrive at the New LIFE School having experienced feelings of failure, inadequacy and frustration within their previous school setting. We believe that all students deserve the chance to have a positive and successful school experience. Through a caring, structured and therapeutic environment, we help our students gain confidence, learn valuable academic and life skills, and realize their true potential.
We recognize that motivation to succeed in school is increased when students are truly engaged in their learning environment. At the New LIFE School, we have created a community that encourages students to establish goals and explore their passions, and pursue their unique interests. Our dedicated staff works to ensure that each student’s individual needs are met through differentiated, hands-on and exciting learning opportunities. Students gain knowledge of their strengths, learn how to manage challenging situations and difficult emotions, and gain the ability to interact with their community in positive and productive ways.
The New LIFE School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin. Rights, privileges, programs and activities are generally accorded or made available to the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and and ethnic rights or the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and athletic and other school-administered programs.
The New LIFE School is operated by Lutheran Social Services of New York (LSSNY). In keeping with the agency’s mission of “enabling people to reach their full potential,” the New LIFE School is honored with the special task of promoting the success of the young people in our care.
The New LIFE School is committed to fostering each individual student’s true potential to excel academically, socially and emotionally. We strive to educate students in time to make a difference by tailoring their academic experience to their specific needs. Our foremost goal is to ensure that the school fits the student, not the student to the school.
The New LIFE School takes great pride in our student body. Our students are ages 8-21 and in grades 3-12. They come from all 5 boroughs of New York City and bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to create a dynamic educational environment. Each of our students contributes their unique abilities, passions, and personalities to make the New LIFE School a positive and vibrant school setting.
Through a modified curriculum, we are able to teach our students appropriate age/grade level material in subject areas such as Mathematics, English, Science, and Social Studies. The New LIFE School strives to utilize a multisensory approach, which will help students gain a better understanding of the concepts and ideas taught in the classroom.
The curriculum is adapted to ensure that each student is striving toward academic success in achieving New York State learning standards and/or alternative learning standards. Through the adoption and implementation of high quality curriculum products developed by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, Steck-Vaugn, Sussman, Pearson Educational, and the Wilson Reading Program, our academic program emphasizes Reading, Phonics, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies as well as tools to prepare for New York State Testing. High School students will receive regular practice and preparation for New York State Regents Testing.
The New LIFE School will provide instruction according to the New York State Learning Standards. Students will be provided access to New York State testing at each identified grade level in accordance with the Federal No Child Left Behind Act. Testing modifications will be incorporated as identified in each student’s existing Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and made part of the daily instructional process.

In addition to academic competency, the New LIFE School enhances our students’ understanding and exposure to the arts and music through the implementation of regularly scheduled learning sessions. Students also learn about the importance of health and physical education through regular gym and health sessions. The New LIFE School recognizes the need to continually engage students in creative ways. This is achieved through innovative club activities, specialized counseling groups, and school wide initiatives.
Throughout the year the academic program is additionally enhanced by field trips to academically-focused locations such as the Bronx Zoo, the New York Hall of Science, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Intrepid Sea/Air/Space Museum, the Museum for African Art, the American Museum of the Moving Image, and the American Museum of Natural History.
Students have the opportunity to play basketball and other sports informally, and plans are being made to develop formal team sports in the future.
The New LIFE School strives to encourage our students to make positive life choices. This is accomplished through our behavior modification program called the Merit System. For each period of the school day, students accrue points based on their behavior. These points are tallied and used to participate in various incentive trips and activities. Students benefit from seeing that their positive choices have a direct effect on their daily activities.
The New LIFE School is a state-of-the-art educational facility. Our building was designed and built for our program in 2010. The building boasts three floors including: a two-story water wall, a science lab, an indoor gymnasium, a band room, a music recording studio, a barber shop, and bright and spacious classrooms.
